In this course you will receive an overview of the historical background
of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. The focus is on the history of the
land and the people of ancient Israel.

This course covers the 800-year span of Israel’s history as a nation as
documented in Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings. It
progresses through the conquest of the Canaan (or the Promised Land)
under Joshua to the period of the Judges, the united monarchy under
Saul, David, and Solomon, through the divided monarchies of Israel and
Judah, and finally, the fall of both nations.

Course Goal:

The goal of this course is to provide a basic understanding of
modern Israeli politics, culture, and identity so that the next time you
hear about Israel in the news, you will be informed enough about
the history of this area to comprehend the many sides and narratives that
interact to shape the complex reality of Israel today.
